Episode #4 – Checkboxes & Complex Layouts

Posted 07/27/2009 - 8:36 pm by Mathias Reisch

In this fantastic new episode of the Android Development Video Tutorial Series, we will have a look at how to use checkboxes and how to incorporate them into a complex layout. This episode takes the project from episode #3 as a base and builds on top of it. So if you have not watched episode #3 yet, I highly recommend that you do that before watching this episode.

I am absolutely lost for words here.

THIS SERIES IS MIND BLOWING!!!!

There are tutorials and there are tutorials and there is YOU!!!!

Pardon the capitalization, but hope they explain my level of excitement after having watched the series. And I am just 3 parts (episodes as you call them) through.

Cheers…..

P.S.: Hoping to see more of this in the future.

Hi, i have to say your that your explaination of these topics are absolutely top notch!. I’ve just gotten a android phone cause i wanted to start making apps for it but after the info i found on developer.android…i thought this is good in a way BUT almost useless in practical ways. Anyway hope u will do as many examples as possible cause this is superb! many thx :-)

Greetings. First of all I want to say thank you. I am almost completely new to development of any kind. I have scoured the official Android site trying to learn what I can, but I find it bit undesirable. You bring light and life to learning and developing android. You are clear and well spoken with your instructions and obviously know Android well. My hat is off to you, Cheers.

Hi, I`m very interested about your tutorials. I came up on this one number 4. I think i got just one small problem. i dont know why but the text is bolded even the checkbox for bold text is not checked. What is the problem?

All code is good, i checked it many times.

Keep up the good work.

Hello again Mr. Mathias the tutorials so far are great for me ,you do a really great job at explaining how this stuff works,i have only one question when i used a lower resolution the checkbox tended to go somehow under the text and wasn’t a nice view.
Do you have any idea on how can i correct that so the program looks nice even on low resolution mobile phones?Or is just an emulation problem and once i install the aplication on a real phone it will look nice even though it has small resolution?Thank you very much for the time spent doing these tutorials

These tutorials are perfect! I really like the explanation of object oriented programming as it pertains to Android/Java. I took some C++ in college and wanted to get back into programming and these tutorials have been great. It teaches you how to use Eclipse, which classes/methods/variables you have available, and starts with designing layouts which is just what I wanted. I should have learned this way while I was in school!

Hey, thanx for another great tutorial
here just something extra for others to try out, instread of just one color we can make it print random color everytime it is clicked, here is code

Random rand = new Random();
int red = rand.nextInt(255);
int green = rand.nextInt(255);
int blue = rand.nextInt(255);

if(checkColor.isChecked())
myText.setTextColor(Color.rgb(red, green, blue));
