New Android SDK: The Donut Has Arrived!

Posted 09/16/2009 - 8:16 pm by Mathias Reisch

In case you haven’t noticed yet, Google released the new Android SDK version 1.6 today. It is based on the donut branch from the Android Open Source Project and introduces a couple of new features. Among the many new technologies and features are support for CDMA and additional screen sizes as well as a new gesture API, a text-to-speech engine and a new accessibility framework.

New ADT Required

The new Android SDK 1.6 requires a new version of the ADT (Android Development Tools) so be sure to update that package within eclipse. To do that, simply start eclipse and go to “Help” -> “Check for Updates”. Eventually there should be a screen that lists new versions for the “Android DDMS” and the “Android Development Tools”. If you have any other plugins or extensions installed, you may see additional available updates here. Check the boxes in front of each item you want to update and click “Next” two times. Accept the license agreement and click “Finish”. After the updating process has finished you will be asked to restart eclipse. Do so and you should be all set.

Watch It

Google released a video that shows some highlights of the Android SDK 1.6. Have a look and happy coding!
